China Sets One-China Conditions for Taiwan’s APEC Summit Participation
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said Beijing had consistently managed Taiwan's participation in APEC meetings in line with the one-China principle, relevant provisions of the forum's memorandum of understanding and established practices.
“As long as the abovementioned practices are followed, the Taiwan region can participate in the meeting,” Zhu said during a news conference.
Taipei has reportedly received an invitation to the Nov. 18-19 summit through email.
Taiwanese leader Cho Jung-tai called on Beijing to guarantee equal treatment and ensure that Taiwan could attend the gathering with dignity.
“We are continuing our efforts to secure such participation and will not rush into making any other decisions,” he said Tuesday.
The dispute comes against the backdrop of previous disagreements over Taiwan's representation at APEC gatherings. Taiwan boycotted the 2001 summit in Shanghai after Beijing refused to accept its preferred representative.
China later delivered an invitation to Taiwan in person for the 2014 summit.
Taiwan has participated in APEC since 1991 under the designation “Chinese Taipei.”
