China Stresses Urgency of US-Iran Talks, Praises Pakistan’s Efforts
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters, “China calls on relevant parties to start peace talks as soon as possible,” emphasizing Beijing’s support for initiatives aimed at de-escalation and the restoration of dialogue.
Responding to a question about Pakistan’s involvement, Mao added, "We commend Pakistan for its efforts for deescalating the tensions."
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had announced on Sunday that Islamabad would be “honored” to host discussions between Washington and Tehran, complementing a quadrilateral foreign ministers’ meeting held as part of broader regional mediation efforts.
Mao further emphasized China’s support for Pakistan’s role as a mediator, stating, "We support it to continue as a mediator and stand ready to work with Pakistan and other parties to strengthen communication and coordination to translate work to end hostility to safeguarding peace and stability."
She reiterated that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are unacceptable, stressing that "Military means will not solve the root cause. The conflict serves no one's interests."
The call for diplomacy comes as regional tensions have surged following the Feb. 28 U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran, which has reportedly killed more than 1,400 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting U.S. military facilities, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
