Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Hits China's Xinjiang Region

(MENAFN) A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Monday afternoon, authorities said, with no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or structural damage.

The tremor struck at 12:12 p.m. local time (0412 GMT), with its epicenter recorded at 40.88 degrees north latitude and 84.17 degrees east longitude — within Yuli County of the Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin, a state news agency reported, citing data from the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The quake originated at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) beneath the surface.

Emergency officials have not issued any alerts relating to casualties or damage to infrastructure in the affected area. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
