US Seeks ‘Stable and Respectful’ Ties with China—Defense Official

(MENAFN) A senior US defense policymaker stated on Saturday that Washington aims to maintain a constructive and steady relationship with Beijing, emphasizing the importance of both stability and mutual respect. The remarks were delivered by Elbridge Colby, the US under secretary of defense for policy, during a session at the Munich Security Conference.

According to Colby, the United States is intent on preventing confrontation while remaining open to economic engagement that benefits both sides. At the same time, he stressed that such engagement must be grounded in strategic advantage. “But we obviously recognize … that we need to do that from a position of strength,” he said.

He further noted that Washington acknowledges Beijing’s progress, including its expanding military capabilities, and is shaping its policies in response. The US, he explained, is assessing developments with realism and strategic clarity. “We are looking at it clear in a clear-eyed way” with the goal of achieving a favorable balance of power and stability, he said.

Addressing the absence of Taiwan from the 2026 US National Security Strategy, Colby said President Donald Trump remains aligned with longstanding US policy toward China. “is actually quite consistent with our traditional position one-China policy position.”

He reiterated that the administration is pursuing steadiness in relations with Beijing while also reinforcing its strategic posture in the Pacific region. “We are seeking stability, a willingness to engage, but also clarity and strength and we're all about building up a position of strength” in the Pacific, he said.

Colby added that strengthening partnerships, particularly across the Indo-Pacific, is essential to achieving what he described as a shared deterrent capacity. The US, he argued, must collaborate closely with allies to “build up a position of collective strength.”

Turning to the future of the transatlantic alliance, Colby said Washington is advocating for what he termed “NATO 3.0” within NATO. He described this updated phase as encompassing “a couple of things,” including “flexible realism ... a refocusing on, in a sense, going back to … NATO as a military alliance,” he said.
