China Sanctions Former Japanese Military Official

(MENAFN) China declared on Monday that it had introduced punitive measures against Shigeru Iwasaki, a former head of the Joint Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, accusing him of "openly colluding with 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces."

According to an official release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Iwasaki "openly colluded with 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces, which seriously violated the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, seriously interfered with China’s internal affairs, and seriously infringed on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Under the announced measures, which took effect on Monday, all of Iwasaki’s movable and immovable assets, along with other holdings within China, will be frozen. In addition, entities and individuals in China are barred from conducting business dealings or cooperative activities with him, and he will be refused a visa as well as entry into China, including Hong Kong and Macao.

As of now, authorities in Tokyo have not issued any response regarding the sanctions.

Earlier this year, Taiwan’s administration designated Iwasaki as an “official policy adviser” to the Cabinet, a move that has drawn attention amid the current dispute.

The development unfolds against a backdrop of heightened strain between Beijing and Tokyo, following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting that a Chinese assault on Taiwan could legally be considered a “survival-threatening situation,” which might enable Japan to “exercise the right of collective self-defense.”
