Eight Chinese Nationals Attempt Illegal Entry to S. Korea
The incident occurred late Sunday night, with authorities receiving a report of a suspicious boat at approximately 11:38 PM local time (14:38 GMT). The vessel was later captured around 1:43 AM (04:43 GMT) the following morning.
The boat, which carried the eight individuals, was towed to a port in Taean County, located in South Chungcheong province on South Korea's western coast. During the operation, one of the passengers jumped into the water but was rescued by authorities shortly afterward.
According to authorities, the group had departed from Weihai, a city in China's Shandong province, at around 10:00 AM (13:00 GMT) on Sunday. The boat had traveled roughly 300 kilometers (nearly 186 miles) from the Chinese coast in an attempt to enter South Korea for employment opportunities.
The Korean Coast Guard confirmed that it would pursue arrest warrants for the individuals involved, citing violations of the country’s Immigration Control Act.
