Report Claims Chinese Students Urged to Spy on Peers
The think tank UK-China Transparency (UKCT) states that its poll of scholars in the field of Chinese studies unveiled incidents where Chinese governmental figures cautioned university lecturers against addressing certain subject areas during lectures.
This revelation coincides with the introduction of a new statute that assigns greater accountability to universities in ensuring the protection of intellectual autonomy and the liberty of expression.
The Chinese diplomatic mission in London dismissed the claims in the report as "groundless and absurd", asserting that China honors "freedom of speech" both in the United Kingdom and globally.
According to the regulatory authority, the Office for Students (OfS), the principles of "freedom of speech" and scholarly independence are regarded as "fundamental" within the realm of higher education.
The updated law, implemented just last week, mandates that educational institutions take proactive steps to defend and encourage freedom in teaching and speaking, even in scenarios where partnerships with foreign governments exist.
The OfS further warned that academic institutions might face penalties amounting to millions if they neglect to comply with the legislation.
