Two Chinese citizens arrested due to attempted smuggling in Ukraine
“If this is concerned with Chinese citizens, then the lawful rights of Chinese citizens need to be safeguarded,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a live press briefing in Beijing.
Ukrainian authorities announced on Wednesday that they had detained two Chinese individuals in Kyiv, allegedly involved in smuggling classified information related to a key missile system, the RK-360MC Neptune.
According to the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), the Neptune system played a crucial role in the 2022 sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva, which was the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet at the time.
Investigators said one of the arrested individuals was a former student expelled from a Kyiv-based technical university in 2023. The second detainee, reportedly his father, was said to live in China but made periodic visits to Ukraine to help oversee his son’s alleged intelligence-gathering efforts.
Beijing has not yet confirmed the identities of those involved, reiterating the need to protect the rights of any Chinese nationals implicated in the case while awaiting full verification of the details.
